ÇOMÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Sedat Murat underlined that digital addiction, along with the internet, is one of the important issues on the agenda of society and said: “Digital addiction has started to become problematic in recent years. It is important for our young people to use technology for information and education purposes, but it is not a good situation for this use of technology to become a disease, as it is defined today, rather than being used for information purposes over time. With the pandemic period, dependence on digital increased even more. Now, a change and transformation has begun in all institutions in this context. This transformation, which saves time, money and space, has further increased our social inactivity. As a society, we have never been a society that loves sports very much. Although there have been changes in this direction in recent years, we are still not a society that engages in sports at the desired level. Before the pandemic, as a university, we had many projects related to sports activities, but we could not realize them yet due to the pandemic. As the Trakya Universities Association, we organize good events together and encourage each other. I hope that the panel organized in this context will be a successful panel.”
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Prof. Dr. In his opening speech, Halis Yunus Ersöz stated that he was happy to be together in such a panel and said:
“Universities are institutions that produce knowledge and are expected to shed light on the public and private sectors, so we should cooperate more with universities. All studies should be illuminated with scientific data. In this context, today we will talk about addiction with the representatives of our universities. Digital addiction is as important an issue as substance addiction. In this sense, I think this meeting is very important.
Digital addiction has begun to increase over the last quarter century. This situation has deepened even more with the pandemic. In fact, when we look at it, the pandemic changed all social relations. New working relationships began to emerge. It created significant changes in terms of education, culture and shopping. With staying at home, digital tools have become more prevalent in spending free time, and quarantine processes have increased the need for digital processes.
While research has shown that computer and mobile phone usage has increased, the share of digital games in this increase has also increased. People's social habits have changed and socializing and leisure activities have been replaced by access to digital tools.
It is predicted that digital habits will continue even if the pandemic ends. There are many studies on this subject, and these studies reveal that the use of technological tools is increasing.
At this point, we need to manage this process with the activities we will put forward. The habit of doing sports is low in our country. People engage in a branch of sport at some point in their lives, but it is not continuous. We need to change this habit and direct people to sports, exercise and mobility.
Our Ministry is carrying out many studies at this point. With these studies, we plan to reduce digital addiction and substance addiction. We evaluate all activities carried out by the Ministry of Youth and Sports within the scope of combating addiction. Every activity organized in this context is very important to us. “On behalf of our Ministry, I would like to thank those who contributed to this event.”
